Hair Metal Mixtape #350 – They Live! – Sun Mar 7

Growing up, Sundays were always fun TV days because of Kung Fu Theater and Cinema Sunday. So today we have a John Carpenter film, so stick around for Eclipse, LA Guns and Europe!

But first… Hear N’ Tell!

Neon Coven release single “Dead To Me”

Neon Coven, the darkwave, alternative rock band from Los Angeles, CA, featuring Jacob Bunton (Mick MarsAdlerLynam) and Ace Von Johnson (LA GunsFaster Pussycat) has released the single “Dead To Me”via New Ocean Media. The song is from the band’s debut full-length album Future Postponed which was released this past Oct 2020.

Let’s take a listen and I’ll tell you more after…

Here’s Neon Coven and their new single “Dead To Me” right here on Hair Metal mixtape

That was Neon Coven and their new single “Dead To Me” from the band’s debut full-length album Future Postponed which was released this past Oct 2020.

Neon Coven is comprised of Anthony Montemarano (vocals), Jacob Bunton (Keyboards/guitar/bass), Ace Von Johnson (guitar), and Kyle Cunningham (drums).

The band’s debut full-length album Future Postponed was released this past October 30th. Produced by Jacob Bunton, the album features 11 tracks ranging from songs about survival and balance to emotionally charged anthems of empowerment. The songs live in the space between challenging the need for certainty and, ultimately, learning to accept uncertainty.

Future Postponed is set to inspire, intrigue and terrify all at once,” states guitarist Ace Von Johnson. “The material within runs a musical gamut, in which we as a band proudly exercise our ability to take bold strides in diversity. From dance-pop to goth rock, each song will take you twisting down a new road. I’ve worked on a lot of albums in my career, and thus far, this is the one I’m most proud of.”

From Los Angeles, CA, Neon Coven abandoned much of the ethos of the tradition of heavy rock to create an intellectual and theoretical sound, linked to an emphasis on anthemic, synth-heavy dance-music. The band came together when Von JohnsonBuntonMontemarano and Cunningham formed the band as a side project on the suggestion of a mutual friend. “We were all on the Monsters Of Rock Cruise,” explains Bunton. “Our mutual friend April Lee said, ‘you guys should start a band.’ Ace and I had been friends for years, and we both met Anthony on the cruise. After we got back to LA, we started writing songs whenever our schedules would align.”

The band released their first EP Risen in 2017 containing the songs “Bleeding Love” and “No One Knows You’re Dead,” both appearing in the horror movie Hesperia. The band followed the EP with a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Never Let Me Down Again” in 2018. In 2019, the band released its second EP, The Haunting.

The Mixtape!

OK, Mixtapers! It’s Sunday Cinema time! It’s Kung Fu Theater Time! Actually, today’s feature film is a John Carpenter classic called “They Live”.  They Live (titled onscreen as John Carpenter’s They Live) is a 1988 American science-fiction action horror film written and directed by John Carpenter, based on the 1963 short story “Eight O’Clock in the Morning” by Ray Nelson. Starring Roddy PiperKeith David, and Meg Foster, the film follows an unnamed drifter who discovers through special sunglasses that the ruling class are aliens concealing their appearance and manipulating people to consume, breed, and conform to the status quo via subliminal messages in mass media.

So here’s Def Leppard with God’s of War off of 1987’s Hysteria, Right here on Hair Metal Mixtape!

That was Guns N’ Roses and Rocket Queen from their 1987 debut album Appetite For Destruction.

The album was released to little mainstream attention in 1987. It was not until the following year that it became a massive commercial success, after the band had toured and received airplay with the singles “Welcome to the Jungle“, “Paradise City” and “Sweet Child o’ Mine“. It topped the Billboard 200 and became the best-selling debut album of all time, as well as the eleventh best-selling album of all time in the United States. With over 30 million copies sold worldwide, it is also one of the best-selling records of all time.

And that is today’s Hair Metal Mixtape #350 – They Live!

It was nice to see two worlds collide that I consider big parts of my life. Again, music and film. Thanks for tuning in and thanks for sticking around. I appreciate and respect your time.

That’s it folks! Thanks for listening!

I hope you are maintaining your physical distance from your friends and loved ones for now and yet also engaging in social connectivity.

Jason Lambson (Lead Vocalist, Guitarist & Keyboardist) said in an interview on The Artist Spotlight on Rock 94.7 “Lobotomy is a song about rejoining the music world after a 12 year complete hiatus. After telling a number of people that I was going to try and finally go for it with music, a few people were very supportive while a good pile of others looked at me like I was crazy. After all, I am close to midlife here. The response has been overwhelmingly positive in all fairness and we were even featured on a week long local artist spotlight here on 100.3 X. The song expresses all of these things including calling all my friends (musician) buddies to see who was in.”

The Mixtape!

OK, Mixtapers! It’s Saturday so you know what that means. We’re home with family or friends (socially distanced I hope) or just chillin on a zoom hang, but anyway, we’re home and we are here to rock out with or air guitars out! That’s right! Saturdays I like to keep the hair tall and family friendly. And I believe Ear Damage Adam try to do the same with Ear Damage on Saturdays. Anyway, that way we can ALL tune in to Hair Metal Mixtape as a family and turn it up! Happy Hair Day folks!

And to kick off today’s Mixtape; though the album Done with Mirrors was intended to mark Aerosmith’s comeback, Permanent Vacation is often considered their true comeback, as it was the band’s first truly popular album since their reunion. “Rag Doll“, “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)“, and “Angel” became major hits (all three charted in the Top 20) and helped Permanent Vacation become the band’s greatest success in a decade. The album features a cover of the Beatles‘ “I’m Down“, which originally appeared as a B-side to their single “Help!” in 1965. This was Aerosmith’s second commercially released Beatles cover, after “Come Together“. Permanent Vacation has sold over five million copies in the U.S.

So here’s Aerosmith with their 1987 comeback hit AND comeback album that placed them them on the top 40 Hair Metal Mantel for all to enjoy and to agree that Dude, looks like a lady.

That was Shiraz Lane with their latest single “Broken Into Pieces” released September 2020

The band has issued the following statement regarding the track: “‘Broken Into Pieces’ is the product of a fruitful collaboration with multiple musical talents. On this specific track we had the pleasure of working with and including insight from Jean Beauvoir, Per Aldeheim and Joonas Parkkonen, who helped us squeeze out the full potential of the composition. The song has a dark flavoured mood along with the unquestionable Shiraz hit factor introduced in the chorus. The track will surely be one of the hard rock songs to remember from this decade.” Shiraz Lane is currently working on a new full length album. It’s not known at this time if “Broken Into Pieces” will be included on the record.

And that is today’s Hair Metal Mixtape #349 – Break Out!

How about them apples!

Saturdays don’t have to be heady or meta, that just have to be fun. Thanks for tuning in and thanks for sticking around. I appreciate and respect your time.

Thursday March 4th
Hair Metal Mixtape #347 – Leathür N’ Denim – Thu Mar 4

I’m trying a couple of new ideas on the Mixtape this week and today is one of them, so stick around for Bon Jovi, Krokus and Night Ranger for a new Leathür N’ Denim Thursday!

But first… Hear N’ Tell!

The Mixtape!

OK, Mixtapers! Like I mentioned at the top of the show, I’m trying a couple of new ideas on the Mixtape this week and today is one of them. Today I am premiering and Beta testing a fixed idea for Thursdays. I’m thinking of calling it Leathür & Denim Thursday or just Leathür & Denim because I wanted to reserve a day when I only play stuff from the first wave of glam metal in the early 80’s. Technically the Wiki Gods define the First wave as the years 1981–1986 and second wave from 1986-1991. So I thought it would be baller if I just rock out to early 80’s Leathür & Denim and remind us weekly where it all evolved or snowballed, pun intended. And to be honest with you this is gonna be a fun way to balance the classic with the current because tomorrow I am premiering another permanent fixture that I want to beta test and that’s New Music Fridays where I play ONLY new music to balance out the Thursday before plus I get to put together all the Hear N’ Tells into one Mixtape and it’ll feel like a Hear N’ Tell summary. How’s that sound? If you got an opinion or an idea be sure to hit me up on the social meeds. Hair Metal Mixtape is on Facebook and Instagram.

OK, I’ve givin’ you mixtapers enough time to change into your Leathür & Denim right? Good because I’m all fired up for today! And so is Fastway, here’s “All Fired Up” from the same titled album ‘All fired Up!’ Right here on Hair Metal Mixtape!

That was Night Ranger with “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” from their 1982 debut studio album Dawn Patrol released November 1, 1982, by MCA Records.

And that is today’s Hair Metal Mixtape #347 – Leathür N’ Denim Thursday

How about them apples!

That was fun and refreshing. Sometimes I feel like I play too much of something and I start to get heady about things, so by dedicating a day to the First Wave of Glam Metal, I feel I can let it rock, let it roll and let it go. Thanks for tuning in and thanks for sticking around. I appreciate and respect your time.

That’s it folks! Thanks for listening!

I hope you are maintaining your physical distance from your friends and loved ones for now and yet also engaging in social connectivity.
