Netflix series: Lost In Space review

This is not your 1960’s Lost In Space. Nor is this all the other ones, too. This is a Netflix series which ups the anti and is a total win.

The new Netflix series Lost In Space is a heart pounding, non stop action adventure series filled with thrilling scenes as well as touching emotional moments dealing with a barrage of situations that make you laugh AND cry while having you at the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens on the next episode.

I give this new series two thumbs up without any wiggle room for negativity or hate. In my experience with Netflix series, one has to “get through” the first few episodes for it to get better. Not this one. Every episode is forward moving and ever evolving into new complicated situations for the Robinson family and all other parties involved. I like the fact that the colony left Earth because of an apocalyptic disaster. It’s fascinating to think about it in the way they present it to you. Could you pass the trails to be part of the new colony? What lengths would you go through to make sure your whole family passes the series of tests.

The cast of the Robinson family I feel was really comfortable together. They had good chemistry where they needed it and awkwardness when it had to be. I came into this series a Toby Stephens fan from his role as Captain Flint in STARZ’s series Black Sails. He is know playing the role of John Robinson. I was in.  He has played a good, strong leader in the past so now he is gonna kill it as the head Robinson. Then immediately you realize he’s not the glue that binds the family, it’s Molly Parker‘s character of Maureen Robinson. The chemistry between the family in general is real. It’s invites you in comfortably while all these uncomfortable things are happening to them. All of the kids are great too. You get to know them and their vulnerabilities pretty quickly.

The sets and special FX are a lot better than I expected. It looked really good with a great overall tone. Not to apocalyptic and not to sci-fi. I felt like all of the practical props and effects looked realistic and believable. Especially when we find out where the technology comes from. I like the flashbacks throughout to explain the present goings on. It gives you back stories quickly, like in the series Lost.

The acting overall was just fine. Will Robinson played by Maxwell Jenkins acting is a little over the top at first but you quickly get used to his facial expressions and like him real quick. He’s very expressive. The rest of the family does a fantastic job. The introduction to all the characters come at you real fast when they finally meet up with the rest of the colony. That’s when it gets a little to CW for me, but overall the other characters that really stand out besides the Robinsons are Ignacio Serricchio as Don West and Parker Posey as Dr. Smith.

Let’s not overlook the robot, that robot is an awesome upgrade to the 60’s show. This thing is terrifying and fascinating all at the same time. The special FX effects for it is like an advanced Terminator model. I love how it doesn’t have a face like we know it. It has what looks like celestial lights on what looks like a fencing mask. The relationship between the robot and Will is much cooler than a pet robot or a pet animal. This relationship starts in an awesome way and has you biting your nails the whole time not knowing what is going to happen with the robot. Dr. Smith, played by Parker Posey, is a fabulous villain. She’s sneaky and definitely is looking out for herself and all the baggage she brings with her. Don West played by Ignacio Serricchio is the Poe Dameron of this series. He’s the bad boy mechanic who stows away and is doing it for the money but does the right thing in the end because he’s a good guy.

Overall for this first season I am going to give this series two thumbs up. It catches your attention from the beginning and keeps you there until the end. I recommend this show to the whole family. It’ll definitely get you talking about what you would do as a family in these family crisis situations.
